But lusty paradise is shattered.
Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror.
Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future, Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter. But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold.
Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever?
We were lucky enough to land an interview with the infamous Q and intriguing Tess. Wow…what an experience. Check it out! 🙂
**WARNING: This interview may contain spoilers if you have NOT read Tears of Tess yet.**
Going to France equals the trip of a lifetime, right? Yeah try going to France…meeting THE Q Mercer…yeah, there are no words. Don’t get me wrong, we’re excited to meet Tess too….but seriously? It’s Q! SQUEEE!!!!! The flight is rather uneventful, except I’m pretty sure if the engines gave out, we would still manage to fly there on Brooke’s excitement level alone. She hasn’t stopped moving since we sat down and her smile couldn’t get any bigger.
Lisa: “Are you excited?”
Brooke: “YES!!!”
I rub my ear and laugh a little at her enthusiastic response.
Lisa: “Okay, well I’m sitting right next to you…so there is no need to shout. You think you’ll calm down before we meet Q and Tess?”
Brooke: “NO!!!”
OMG…I am going to go deaf. Did I bring any Xanax? Hmm…might need to look into that. As the plane lands, Brooke kicks into over drive. Oh goodie!
Brooke: “OMG…we’re here! Q is here! We’re in the same country as Q! OMG!”
She’s bouncing. Brooke doesn’t bounce. Oh boy.
Lisa: “Alright speedy, let’s calm down before they ship us back to the US or we get questioned by security.”
Brooke gives me a deer-in-headlights look.
Brooke: “You think they would do that?”
I roll my eyes and giggle. I could have so much fun with possibly scaring her, but I’ll be nice. We make our way through customs and head out where, of course, Q has a driver waiting to pick us up. Brooke and I share a knowing look and swoon as we slide into the luxurious car for the drive to the estate. The countryside is gorgeous, peaceful, relaxing…exactly what we needed after too many hours cooped up on an uncomfortable airplane and just what Brooke needed to bring her down from the stratospheric level of excitement that she was on.
We pull up to the Moineau residence and I’m pretty sure it just redefined the word ‘stunning’. Both of our jaws are on the ground. It’s huge! And beautiful and I think I can speak for Brooke when I say we’d both be more than willing to move in….right now. We’re greeted by a friendly face, Suzette meets us with warm hugs and we feel very ‘French’ as we do the kiss-on-each-cheek thing. She brings us into ‘the’ library…of course you show off your stunning library to the two book worms. Yup, pretty sure we are moving in. Soon. Brooke’s eyes are wide as saucers now as we both look around at all the books and I have to wipe the drool off my chin.
We were apparently too distracted by our surrounds to notice that Q and Tess have risen from two of the wing back chairs in the middle of the room to greet us. As I stop and catch their eye, I smile at the two happy faces welcoming us. Well, at least they can’t fault our behavior. Hello…Book Bloggers + Lots of Books = Heaven. I tap Brooke’s arm to get her attention and she lazily looks my way, not a care in the world. I gesture with my head in the direction of Tess and Q and she gives me a weird look. I mumble through my teeth…
Lisa: “They’re in the room.”
And now I’m pretty sure Brooke’s eyeballs would pop out of her skull if they weren’t attached. She immediately drops to her knees in her perfectly practiced ‘sub pose’. Oh my Jesus Lord… I want to laugh…and cry…and hide. I look over at Q and Tess, my face probably a mixture of shock and horror, trying to maintain some semblance of control, but at this point? Really? I give them a weak smile.
Lisa: “Sorry about…umm…Brooke. She’s a little excited to be here and meet Q.”
I nudge Brooke, she doesn’t move. I pull on her arm, once again – Does. Not. Move. FML! REALLY Brooke!?!? My smile is shaky at best.
Lisa: “Brooke, why don’t we go sit down in the chairs, over here.”
I walk over to where Q and Tess are standing by the chairs. Silence. No response. OMG…we flew to France for Brooke to completely embarrass me. I died from embarrassment in France – goodbye cruel world. Tess looks over at me, an ever-present indulgent smile on her face.
Tess: “Amateur”
I don’t know if it’s nerves or the hilarity of the situation or just perfect timing on Tess’s part, but I am hysterically laughing. Q has stepped away from where we are standing and goes over to Brooke’s side. He leans down and whispers in her ear, her head barely moves in acknowledgement to whatever he is saying to her. I arch an eyebrow at Tess but she shakes her head a little.
Tess: “He’s got this.”
Clearly! In less than a minute Brooke is off the ground, a look of…lust, fear, adoration and excitement is plastered on her face. Tess and I take our seats as Q and Brooke come back over. I lean over and whisper to Brooke…
Lisa: “What did he say?”
Brooke: “Not telling.”
Lisa: “Oh yes you are…”
Brooke: “Nope. Not happening.”
Lisa: “Best friend code! You have to tell me what the hot Dom just whispered in your ear!”
Brooke: *Sigh*
Lisa: “Did you just sigh?”
Brooke doesn’t answer me. She’s just dreamily staring at Q. Damn it…I will make sure she tells me! We have a long flight home and I can be VERY annoying. We chat for a little while, catching up with them on what’s been going on in their world, when I decide it’s about time we get started with the interview.
Lisa: “Thank you both so much for bringing us out to France, it’s absolutely beautiful out here.
Tess: “We’re glad you both could make it.”
Brooke: “We know you’re both very busy, so we don’t want to take up too much of your time with the interview.”
Q: “No problem at all. We have a lot in store for you while you’re here.”
Brooke and I are on the same wave length as we share a look of glee! Internal SQUEEEE!!!!
Brooke: “Well then let’s get this party started! Ladies first, Tess are you ready?”
Tess: “Of course.”
Brooke: “So…going to Mexico – do you think it was a blessing or a curse?”
Tess: “Both. It was a curse for most of the time, but it led me to Q so I suppose it turned into a blessing”
Lisa: “At least it ended up as a blessing! Are you glad you never stopped fighting?”
Tess: “Yes. I would never have been able to NOT fight, but my fierceness is what attracted Q. Which means everything.”
Brooke: “The day you ran, would you change anything about that? Or do you believe that everything happens for a reason and all your decisions have brought you to where you are today?”
Tess: “I probably wouldn’t have run. I KNOW I wouldn’t have run if I knew what would happen, but ultimately it changed my feelings toward Q a lot sooner. I don’t know if I would’ve accepted him as I did if I hadn’t.”
Lisa: “Have you kept in touch with Brax since you left? We know you said you would remain friends.”
Tess: “Yes, he’s emailed me a few times and he let me know he went on a date with Bianca a week or so ago. I’m pleased for him.”
Brooke: “Are you glad that Q ‘gave in to the beast’?”
Tess: “Yes. I’m determined to make him accept that part of himself.”
Lisa: “I think you’ll succeed. If anyone can do it, you can. Alright Q, it’s your turn. Are you prepared for the hot seat?”
Q: “I think I can handle it.”
Mmmm….I think he can too.
Lisa: “Are you glad you gave in to the beast?”
Q: “Not really no. I’ve fought a lifetime of winning and now Tess is determined to make me break those walls and I’m not sure I’m ready.”
Brooke: “Oh…we think you are and we can’t wait for those walls to come down. What was the first thing that came to mind when you knew Tess ran?”
Q: “My heart broke. I know this isn’t a safe village—not after my father’s reputation. I was terrified she’d end up in the wrong hands. And when Franco told me she jumped in a car with a strange man. I almost had a heart attack.”
O…M…G…Q just melted our hearts.
Lisa: “Wow. So what was the first thing that came to mind when you found her?”
Q: “Fuck. I’d been such a bastard to her and for that to happen was too much. I could never take it back and I wished I’d sent her home the moment she stepped over the threshold. It was all my fault and I’ll never get rid of the guilt.”
Swoon For someone who considers himself a monster, Q has Brooke and I in the palm of his hand.
Brooke: “Okay, so ‘That night’…in the dungeon…you know which one we’re talking about…it was a little intense! Clue us in, we want to know details. Thoughts, feeling, emotions – give us all of it!”
Q: “I almost gave in. I was so close. But Tess kept fighting and I knew I wanted more. I wanted the anticipation. The enjoyment of the hunt. It was only the thought of finally taking her that stopped me that night. I don’t know what would’ve happened if I had given in completely.”
Brooke glances over at me, her eyes speak volumes. THAT was holding back? Oh boy…umm…wow.
Lisa: “Well our last question is more of a request…”
I flick my eyes over to Brooke for moral support and all she gives me is a cheesy grin. Thanks friend!
Lisa: “We both think it’s hot when you speak French…like really hot…can you just give us a few lines…please. Anything! We’ll take it!”
Q: “Je suis a Tess.”
Brooke: “What does that mean?”
Q: “I belong to Tess.”
Swoon again. This man can do no wrong.
Brooke: “Wow! Umm…”
Brooke shakes her head, Q can affect us too easily.
Brooke: “Where were we? Oh yeah, time for both of you at the same time! What are your five favorite characteristics about the other? Physical and/or non-physical…”
Q: “I love her spirit, fight, strength, beauty, inner soul, and need to care for me. That’s five right?”
Brooke is gazing dreamily at Q, I nudge her with my elbow.
Brooke: “Huh? Oh…yeah, five, sure, uhh huh.”
I look over at Tess and we giggle.
Lisa: “Your turn Tess.”
Tess: “I love his sacrifice women, his inner strength even though he thinks he’s bad. I love his eyes and his tattoo. I love his soul.”
Awww….
Lisa: “Do you think fate brought you together or do you think it was always destined that the ‘monsters’ would find each other?”
Q: “I think life has a way of bringing people together. We’re cut from the same cloth. We were meant for each other.”
Brooke: “How is the whole “working together” thing going?”
Tess: “Don’t know yet. Q hasn’t let me out of the house. I think he’s feeling a little overprotective.” 🙂
Lisa: “How uncharacteristic!”
Tess, Brooke and I laugh at my little joke.
Lisa: “What are each of your worst regrets?”
Tess: “I can’t say I have any as then it would’ve changed my life path and I wouldn’t have met Q.”
Q: “I have regrets of course, but never about Tess.”
Brooke: “How about a little rapid fire? Tell us the first thing that comes to mind, Pool Table?”
Q: “Sex and lust and need”
Lisa: “Q?
Tess: “Master, maître, home.”
Brooke: “Esclave?”
Q: “Mine, submissive but a fighter, my Tess.”
Lisa: “Broken?
Q: “Not broken, just different.”
Brooke: “Sparrow?”
Tess: “Q completely. His mission to save other women who need help.”
Lisa: “58?”
Q: “Tess. The slave who captured my heard.”
Awww…
Brooke: “Okay, last part. Either/Or…Australia or France?
Tess: “France.”
Lisa: “Q or Quincy?”
Tess: “Q.”
Brooke: “Esclave or Tess?”
Q: “Tess.”
Lisa: “Pain or Pleasure?”
Both: “Both.”
They share a secret smile. Mmm…this just got interesting.
Q: “Together they are…
Tess: “perfect.”
Their eyes are locked with each other and I look over at Brooke. I feel like we’re interrupting a moment or something.
Brooke: “This was awesome, thank you both so much for doing the interview for us.”
Tess: “Well, now that the ‘work’ is over, we can have a little fun.”
Brooke reaches out and grabs my hand. I squeeze it for dear life. EEEP!!! We rise from our chairs, following Q and Tess out of the library. Since they have their back’s to us, Brooke and I do a little happy dance as we exit the room. Don’t judge us…this is exciting! We’re lead down a hallway, past the blue, velvet staircase where Q ceremoniously taps the dark wood paneling. Hmm…this is all too familiar.
We’re lead down the stairs, clinging to each other and practically skipping down the steps. We know where we’re going!!! As we enter the game room both Brooke and I immediately seek out….the pool table. Sweet! 🙂
Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters
I am blown away with this debut novel by Pepper Winters. So freaking blown away. This book pulled me in from the beginning and didn’t let me up until the very end. I am in love with a fictional character that, if it were up to morals and values, I would probably despise. But I can’t. I just can’t. Q Mercer might be a monster, but I would gladly become one too just to share a bond with him. *Sigh*
Tears of Tess is a captivating story about need, desire, and finding all the things that you have been needing in your life at the hands of a depraved man. It is about always fighting, never giving up, and finding love in the most unlikely of places.
I hope my review can do this book justice because this is, honest to god, one of the best books I have read this year. I feel like I could write 84 pages worth of a review and it still wouldn’t come close to doing this book justice. Pepper Winters has set the bar high, in my opinion.
So with that said, here we go…
Meet Tess Snow.
“Three little words: I was sold.”
Tess might just be one of the strongest heroines I have ever read about. She is the definition of ’tiny but mighty’ and my god is this woman a fighter. She is unlike any other woman that I have read about that is kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. She fights, she fights hard, and she never stops fighting. Not when she is forced into cells with other women waiting to be bought, not when she is branded like an animal with her barcode tattoo, and not even when she arrives at her masters home. The girl is a force to be reckoned with and she may have just met her match. Or has she?
He was smooth water- effortless in refinement but just like still water, dangerous if you couldn’t swim. Deadly rips and currents lurked deep below the surface.
Q (Quincy Mercer)
Lord have mercy– this man is the devil, an Adonis, a monster, and a savior all in one. You really want to hate Q. I know I did. But, I just could not. I loved him. Even from the very beginning I absolutely loved this man. I could tell that there was just something underneath that hard exterior. Not necessarily soft but definitely something. You could feel his hurt. The man is so closed off but you just can’t stop yourself from wanting him to open up. Not just for Tess, but for himself, too. And so I refused to give up on Q. I knew he would be worth all the anguish and pain at the end.
So of course now you know that Tess has become Q’s slave. Or, since Q is French, his esclave. Now I know you are probably thinking, “His slave? You expect me to read a book about a woman being sold to man as his slave so that he can do whatever the hell he wants with her whenever the hell he wants to do it and however he so chooses?” The answer to that is easy: why yes, yes I do. Trust me on this one. So. Fucking Worth it.
These two actually have more in common than they realize.
Two souls from the same twisted desires, unable to fully be free until we found each other.
Tess basically has no say in anything that happens to her or around her anymore. She is a slave, a pet, and is longer “Tess”. Q makes that very clear. She no longer has any rights, any freedom or any power. Yet, as powerless as she is, the girls still fights. But not only does she learn that sometime its easier not to fight, she finds herself not wanting to fight anymore.
His hands showed a level of bliss I never experienced. On the floor of the shower, I was his pet. His. Through and through.
If you would like, I could go on and on and about Quincy Mercer but I think Tess does a way better job at than I do.
He fucked with arrogance and power. Every thrust reminded I belonged to him.
Then there were times where Tess really just wanted Quincy instead of Q. She wanted to figure him out just like the rest of us. I was right there with her. I felt like I needed to know why this man is the way he is. What makes him tick? What happened in his past, if anything? Who hurt him?
I’d give anything to follow him—to see if he lived in the dark or light.
Right there with ya, sister!
Okay so without giving the best part of the book away, I will start to wrap things up here. If you are expecting and wanting a ”heart and flowers” book then please, I am telling you now, this is NOT the book for you. This is not an ooey gooey, melt your heart romance novel. It is dark, deep, twisted, and as you all know, my favorite kind of book. The more fucked up the better in my opinion!
I will tell you this though. If you can step out of the little fairytale, mushy, romance box and open your mind to something a little deeper, I think you can definitely enjoy this book. And if you are like me and love these kind of books, then I think you will enjoy a particular ’dungeon’ scene. This particular scene had me turned on, mad, sad, and scared to death. But holy shit, so worth it!
Q may make my soul weep and tear itself into pieces but he made it operatic with joy, too. My soul didn’t just sing, it rejoiced.
I finally found a place where my twistedness belonged.
In Q’s arms.
That’s pretty much it everyone. All I know is that I loved this book. From start to finish, I loved it. Was it easy to read? Hell no. Was it worth reading? Hell yes? Am I absolutely DYING for book 2: Quintessentially Q. Fucking YES!
If you would like to learn a little more about Q and Tess, head on over to the blog and check out mine and Lisa’s interview with the two monsters 😉
Q & Tess Interview at True Story Book Blog
We got them to open up a little and share some nice details!
I will leave you with my favorite quote from the entire book.
“I’m offering you my pain. My blood. My pleasure. I’m offering you the right to whip and fuck. To debase and harm. I’m offering to fight your needs with my own. I’m willing to join you in the darkness and find pleasure in excruciating pain. I’m willing to be your monster, Q.”
Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 “Esclave” Kisses
Is it possible to fall in love with a monster? Is it wrong to crave the attention of a beast? Is it smart to desire a man that you should fear? Ummm….well if it is, it’s too late because after Tears of Tess, my mind doesn’t care which way is up. I’m hooked on Q Mercer with no cure in sight. This book is a mind fuck…heads up now because there is no warm and cuddly in sight in this sucker…and strangely enough, I still got butterflies. Go figure.
Tess Snow…Tessie…Esclave…Ami…she has many names. 20 years old…blonde…grey-blue eyes and I can describe her in one word – a fighter. Her parents didn’t want her, yet she fought to keep her head up regardless of their lack of love and attention. Her boyfriend didn’t understand her, yet she fought to keep ahold of the one person in her life that did love her. Her freedom, her spirit, her desires are taken away from her on a vacation that was supposed to be an escape, and yet she fought to keep every scrap of herself in tact. Regardless of the shame, the fear, the turmoil she was going through, she fought tooth and nail. Tess Snow is an amazing fighter. She’s also smart, resourceful, talented, passionate….and a little dark and twisted.
‘I’d gone my whole life thinking I was timid, brow-beaten, and unwanted by my family, only to find I was a lust-filled dancer, with so many dark desires. This trip would allow me to inspect who I truly was, to be honest, and find the real me. To stop being Tess, the girl who hadn’t stood up for anything in her life – the girl who morphed into what others wanted – and evolve. I’ll find the true Tess. ‘
Q Mercer…Quincy…Master…Stone cold and hard as a rock behind pale jade green eyes. He is the perfect example of the ‘strong and silent’ type. He’s full of mystery and intrigue and so much desire and pent up rage. Q is very complex and I feel like we only get a brief glimpse into his very dark and mysterious past. He seems so closed off but the little pieces that Tess is able to chip away at really speak volumes. What else do I love about Q…I loved that he communicated to Tess thru music…I loved how protective he was of her…his possessiveness….I loved what Tess brought out in him, the monster. He is the dark and twisted master to Tess’s dark and twisted soul.
“You are no one’s but mine. Do you understand?” Eyes flashed with excitement as he spoke, as if he loved the idea. Of course, he loved the idea. How many other women did he ruin?’
I cannot explain Tess and Q…Maître and Esclave…their relationship and connection defies words. They are two perfectly twisted souls that belong together. Two people so damaged they thought they would never truly find the person that understood their deepest darkest needs. The part that makes them monsters…the unlovable parts…the parts they hide from and try to blot out and forget. But the parts they absolutely cannot deny when they are together. I know this sounds like some deep and perverted love affair but seriously it was hypnotically beautiful.
“What will you do with me?” My voice was barely a whisper.
“That is none of your concern.”
“You don’t think my future is any of my concern?”
“No. Because your future is mine.”
The entire book is from Tess’s POV (until the end…but I will come to that)…and it is done with painstakingly perfect precision (like that alliteration – yeah it was a complete fluke! But I’m going with it!) There is a lot of physical violence, tons of mental anguish and you feel every ounce with Tess. There were a lot of points where it was really hard to disconnect because you are so in tune with what she is experiencing. I can’t even say it was a rollercoaster because while there were some high’s, they aren’t your ‘classical normal contemporary romance’ kind of highs. The fact that your excited for her that she is experiencing the pleasure and connection that she has longed for…from someone who world normally be considered a monster…and her pleasure is because of pain…you can see where the mind-fuckery just ran amuck with my brain!
‘“Fuck, tu me fais chaud partout.” Fuck, you make me hot. His voice throbbed, making me ache, yearn.
My heart broke a little more. He owned my sense of hearing, as well as my sense of smell. I couldn’t ignore the baritone of seduction, or the overwhelming need to obey.’
I’m good with pleasure/pain – I’ve read enough BDSM and Dom/Sub books, I’m totally cool with it. Can’t lie – this is a pretty high level. It’s…dark. And I cannot explain the in’s and out’s of why or how it works…but it does. Some people may not like Q…and that’s fine – but even in all his fucked-upidness (I may or may not have just made up a word) he gives Tess a piece of something she needs and craves…more than just on a physical level. The kind of serenity they give to each other, each fulfilling desires they never thought would be satisfied…that’s peace you cannot even fathom.
‘Q dropped his head, biting my collarbone, making me hiss between my teeth. “Only think of me and what I’m doing. There is intimacy in pain, esclave. Let me make your pain my pleasure.”’
Yeah…Q did a number on me. He’s not a BBF. He’s a different breed…you don’t love Q because he gives you love and affection…because he doesn’t. He quenches a dark, crazy thirst you never knew existed. He’s a creature of his environment…a product of a fucked up father who scarred him too early on in life. The poor guy never had a chance and retrained himself from a fate he knew was sealed when he was 16. Now…even though his…tendencies lean towards the extreme, that does not mean he is completely without heart or emotion. It’s there…it’s hidden…but Tess brings it out in him. Once again, that damn connection – you can’t deny it.
‘Q took everything from me, but he didn’t so much as steal it, as I gave it willingly. By allowing him to rule, he gave me something tangible. He allowed me to be me. To be real.’
So this book is not for the faint of heart…if you’re not okay with a lot of deep, dark, horrible things that unfortunately do happen in real life, such as kidnapping, human trafficking, being violated, all of your rights as a human being taken away from you, slavery, rape, murder….all those joyful little things you hear about on the news and watch on Law and Order: SVU….then this is not going to work out well for you. I can’t lie, parts of this book were hard to read…but I knew that going in. Some of the stuff made me want to vomit and hurt things. But…that means the author did a very good job painting a very ugly picture of a very real reality.
“You may not be mine, but I’m fast becoming yours.”
Yeah…this book made a mental mess out of my brain…but I liked it! These are not easily forgotten characters, which is a good thing because their story isn’t over! Quintessentially Q has the potential to completely send me over the edge and I’m so excited about it. The ending that I mentioned before…the epilogue is completely in Q’s POV. OH wow…yeah, that’s just a place I need to spend more time in. Peaking behind the curtain and getting a taste of the beast has barely whet my appetite and I’m desperate for more. 🙂
Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero the better and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex… her books have sex.
She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby (who speaks French—hot!) who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends. She loves to hear from her readers so hit her up at pepperwinters@gmail.com
